Airplane Development - Materials

  • The 2010 aircraft is going to be a highly innovative system in terms of advanced materials. Since composite structures are not allowed within the competition we had to find an alternative way of creating light weight, yet solid structures.

  • A large number of parts were made using the rapid-prototyping manufacturing technology. The result are high precision parts made of polyamide (PA). Moreover, this production process enables us to
    • Build extremely light weight structures
    • Create arbitrary geometries without manufacturing constraints

  • In sections where higher strength is needed, wood will be the primarily used material. These parts are manufactured using a three axis CNC mill.
